Where does our name come from?
Burdiehouse Primary School was built in 1956. It was built to accomodate about 1000 pupils and was opened by the Countess of Dalkeith on Tuesday 16th October at 2.30pm.
It was built on land that was owned by the Straiton family.
There are three parts to the school badge design:
The crest of the city of Edinburgh.
Part of the crest of the city of Bordeaux.
The crest of the Barons of Straiton.

According to various references, the genteel name of Burdiehouse is Bordeaux House.
This connection is because Mary Queen of Scots French servants lived here.
In the Bordeaux crest the castle indicates the Roman occupation of that city, and the crescent shows that at one time the Moors were masters of that city.
The Barons of Straiton were granted a charter by David 1 to own lands of Straiton, Burdiehouse and a hamlet called Phantasy.There are many references in history to this family who occupied the lands of Straiton and Burdiehouse until the middle of the 18th century. The crest of the Straitons was a rising falcon and their motto was 'Resurgo Tento' which means 'We seek to rise'.
