We are working towards becoming an Eco School and a Healthy School this year. If any parents are keen to be involved, please let us know!

Welcome to Burdiehouse Nursery

The early years of children's lives are ones of rapid growth and development. They enter nursery with a significant background of learning experiences within their family and with friends. Staff in pre-school education are therefore working in partnership with parents in developing children's learning.
We hope you and your child will enjoy this first experience of school and feel at home here. Back to top

Aims
At Burdiehouse Nursery we aim to:
* create a stimulating, caring and safe environment for all children in our care
* encourage all of our nursery children to play, communicate, co-operate and develop confidence by promoting positive behaviour and raising self esteem
* provide many varied learning experiences through play for each individual child
* encourage the development of early literacy and numeracy skills
* encourage children to explore, appreciate and respect their environment
* observe, monitor and evaluate pupil progress and consult with parents regarding their children's achievement
* work as partners with parents/carers in an open and honest way
* develop and maintain strong links with other agencies
* extend the children's abilities to communicate ideas and feelings in a variety of ways
These aims are met not only through the careful organisation of resources but also the values and attitudes of the staff and the expectations they set for the children's learning and behaviour. Back to top
What should your child wear?
Your child may use glue, paint and other messy materials. Comfortable, easily washed clothes are most suitable. Dungarees and tight jeans are particularly difficult for a child to manage when going to the toilet, elasticated waist bands are much easier.
As the children often go out to play a suitable outdoor jacket is advisable for colder days and in the summer, a sun hat or cap is requested.
Children are requested to wear gym rubbers in the nursery. You can keep these in the bag hanging on your child's peg.
Please name all clothes clearly. Back to top
How much do I pay?
We ask for a contribution of £1 per week, payable on a Monday. This money is used to buy the children's snack and baking ingredients and it may also be used to cover the cost of replacing old and damaged equipment. We may also ask you to contribute towards the cost of outings.
What do the children eat for their snack?
We are keen to promote healthy eating in the nursery. We offer the children a variety of snacks every day eg. fruit, cheese on toast, sandwiches or vegetables for example.
The children help to prepare the snack. This may include chopping fruit, baking bread or scones, buttering bread for sandwiches or grating cheese. We often bake with the children and make soup or stir fries for example. The children are offered milk or water to drink and wash up their plates and cups afterwards. Snack time is a social occasion when children can become more independent, learn to make their own choices and enjoy the company of their friends while eating. Back to top

Your Child's First Visit
Starting nursery is a big and exciting step for all our children. It is filled with new experiences, new expectations, new adults and children to meet and routines to get used to.
On the first day at nursery your child will stay for an hour. We would ask that you stay too, either in the nursery with your child or in our Parents? room where you can relax with a cup of coffee but be near at hand if your child needs you. After that, we will increase the length of time your child stays in the nursery depending on how he/she is settling. Most children settle very quickly and the staff are here to help them. If you have any concerns, please approach the staff who will be happy to answer any questions. Back to top
How can you help us?
We value the many skills you all have. You can help us in the nursery by:
* working in the garden
* helping to sort and organise story sacks
* joining us on outings
* collecting junk materials for our gluing area
* helping with our library.
We have a suggestions box in the entrance area and would value any ideas you have. Please write your thoughts on a piece of paper and pop it in the box. Back to top
How can we help your child?
Reading and sharing books with your child at home will help to prepare him/her for learning to read at school. To help you, we have a nursery lending library and story sacks. Back to top
Story sacks
Story sacks include story books, characters, games and props which bring the story to life. The charge for the year is £1 and all pre-school children can borrow them. Back to top
Nursery Rhymes
Nursery rhymes are also a very important part of preparing your child for starting school. The time you spend helping your child is valuable as they are learning about how words fit together to make rhymes and this will give them a big step towards starting to read.
We will give you copies of the nursery rhymes that we sing in the nursery. Back to top
What happens if my child has an accident or is unwell at nursery?
The nursery classes and garden are busy places and unfortunately accidents do happen. If your child has an accident simple first aid will be applied in the nursery. If your child has an accident requiring doctor?s attention we will contact you immediately. Therefore we need a telephone number where we can reach you.
Please keep us informed of any changes to telephone numbers.
If your child is hurt in nursery you will receive a written note about the accident and be asked to sign acknowledgement of this.
Illness
Most progress will be made if your child attends nursery regularly but if he/she is unwell please keep him/her at home. If your child has been sick or had diahorrea they should remain at home for 48 hours after recovery so that the infection is not spread. Do please let us know if your child has an infectious illness eg chicken pox, measles, slap cheek etc so that we can inform other parents to look out for these illnesses. Back to top
Keeping safe
The security of our children is of utmost importance. At the end of each session your child will only be allowed to go home if they know the parent/carer/friend who has come to collect your child. Please inform the staff, either by word of mouth, telephone call or by signing the book in the entrance porch. No person under the age of 16 is permitted to collect a child from nursery.
Please ensure that all doors and gates are closed as you leave. Back to top
